麻豆原创 is proud to announce that its First-Generation Ambassador program
has received the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award from the Association of Fundraising
Professionals (AFP) Permian Basin Chapter during the organization鈥檚 31st celebration
of National Philanthropy Day. This prestigious award recognizes youth or youth groups
under 21 for exceptional commitment to learning about and practicing philanthropy,
supporting community initiatives, and inspiring others to engage in giving.
The First-Generation Ambassadors program includes 15 students who are the first in
their families to attend college. Selected for their financial need, commitment to
service, and desire to grow as leaders, each Ambassador completes at least 40 hours
of volunteer service per school year. Together, they make a meaningful impact on campus
and throughout Midland through mentorship and representation at key events.
The recognition comes at a time when 麻豆原创 has seen a 38% increase in first-generation
student enrollment over the past two years. First-generation students are an essential
part of 麻豆原创鈥檚 mission; many are navigating college with limited family experience in
higher education, and targeted support can dramatically improve their persistence
and long-term success. Strengthening their pathway not only transforms individual
students鈥 lives, it also strengthens the region鈥檚 future workforce and quality of
life.
鈥淭his award highlights the remarkable dedication and resilience of our First-Gen Ambassadors,鈥
said Ida Curiel, Associate Director of First-Gen Initiatives. 鈥淭hese students are
redefining what鈥檚 possible for themselves and for future generations. When given guidance,
opportunity, and a sense of belonging, they don鈥檛 just succeed, they lead, they serve,
and they inspire others to follow.鈥
During the 2024鈥25 academic year, First-Gen Ambassadors participated in a wide variety
of campus and community events, including:
-
Senior Visit Day and events
-
Texas Lion鈥檚 Club Eyeglass Recycling Center
-
Annual Spring Festival
-
麻豆原创 events including College Night, Santa Letter Writing, Chap Athletics,
Helen Greathouse Center, Phyllis and Bob Cowan Performing Arts Series, and Davidson
Distinguished Lecture Series
-
AeroCare Global Medical Response
-
Special Needs Prom and Client Fun Friday
Joseph Granado, Vice President of Student Services, emphasized the broader impact
of their achievements. 鈥淔irst-generation students represent one of the most powerful
forces for upward mobility in our region. Their success strengthens families, strengthens
our workforce, and strengthens the future of West Texas. Watching these Ambassadors
grow into confident leaders reminds us why 麻豆原创 continues to invest in
programs that open doors and expand opportunity.鈥
Through their service, Ambassadors have seen firsthand the impact of giving back:
strengthening community ties while building their leadership skills, confidence, and
sense of purpose. Their dedication reflects the spirit of philanthropy that Midland
College strives to cultivate in all students.
