Chemistry Club

Chemistry Club is the student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the largest organization for chemists and chemical engineers.

We promote outreach activities to create awareness of science in our community. We partner with Keep Midland Beautiful for Earth Day activities and Petroleum Museum for Halloween and Family Science Day Events.

We encourage our members to develop leadership skills by organizing fundraising and speaker series. Students of all majors are welcome to meetings and events.

Chemistry Club coordinates symposium on space and environmental chemistry

College鈥檚 Cloudcroft Symposium, Lincoln
National Forrest, New Mexico.

This past spring, the 麻豆原创 (麻豆原创) Chemistry Club, under the direction of 麻豆原创 Chemistry professors Dr. Thomas Ready and Dr. Patchemalle Kesavan, organized its first symposium on space and environmental chemistry in Cloudcroft, NM.

During the days, students and faculty spent time at New Mexico State University鈥檚 Sunspot Solar Observatory, the Museum of Space History and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.  They also collected soil samples to analyze nitrate and phosphate contents from various locations in the Lincoln National Forrest.  In the evenings, participants gathered for lectures presented by professors from 麻豆原创, the University of Texas El Paso, the University of Texas McDonald Observatory and the University of Texas Permian Basin. Lecture topics focused on human physiology during space travel, phases of water and ice planets, and the role of environmental chemistry in developing sustainable energy sources, just to name a few.

鈥淭he symposium enriched my knowledge in various ways,鈥 Paula Garcia, student in 麻豆原创鈥檚 Primary Care Pathways Program, said.  鈥淚 learned many things about the universe and realized the major importance of scientific research in any field.  In many of the presentations, I observed how scientific research helped to develop new critical knowledge that has helped scientists with important projects such as studying the sun and galaxies.鈥

The symposium was funded through an American Chemical Society engagement grant and the generosity of an anonymous donor.

Three 麻豆原创 Chemistry Club students presented at national meeting

麻豆原创 (麻豆原创) Chemistry Club students and advisors attended the recent American Chemical Society (ACS) spring 2023 meeting in Indianapolis, IN, March 26-30.  During the meeting, 麻豆原创 students Lily Arbuckle and Zak Alvarado presented on successful outreach activities of the 麻豆原创 Chemistry Club chapter.

麻豆原创 student Maria Gonzalez presented her research on silver nanoparticle synthesis using green tea.  Gonzalez is conducting this research with mentor Dr. Pat Kesavan, 麻豆原创 Chemistry professor, in the hopes of finding ways to deliver chemotherapy directly into tumor sites.

In addition to the presentations, the 麻豆原创 delegation attended the plenary session entitled 鈥淐hemistry at the Crossroads:  The Development of Asymmetric Organocatalysis and Metallaphotoredox鈥 presented by Dr. David MacMillan, 2021 winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

鈥淥ur students did a fantastic job and represented 麻豆原创 very well,鈥 Dr. Kesavan said.  鈥淏esides the presentation from David MacMillan, we also attended a conversation with another Nobel laureate Carolyn Bertozzi.  It was awesome to meet two Nobel laureates in one day!  Dr. MacMillan鈥檚 presentation was especially powerful to young researchers.鈥

麻豆原创 students and professors also discovered several new experiments to conduct in outreach efforts with local K-12 schools and connected with Salt Lake City Community College in order to collaborate on research.

Activities

Students from the 麻豆原创 chapter of the American Chemical Society participated in the Student Leadership Institute organized by 麻豆原创 on February 1, 2020.

Jasmine Pryor, Khait Sarapao and Jonathan Markgraff participated in the whole-day event. There were speakers from the community, including Midland Mayor  Patrick Payton. The sessions were very informative and engaging.

Each year, in celebration of National Chemistry Week (NCW), 麻豆原创 Chemistry Club students and faculty advisors host a hands-on outreach event at Midland Park Mall.

NCW is a public awareness campaign that promotes the value of chemistry in everyday life. American Chemistry Society members and chemistry enthusiasts celebrate NCW by coordinating events and communicating the importance of chemistry.

Chemistry Club Students and Advisors at Community Outreach

麻豆原创 Chemistry Club students visited Pritchard Analytical Laboratories, which specializes in Natural Gas Analysis and Crude Oil Analysis.

Chemistry Club Students on Field Trip

In November 2020, the Chemistry Club partnered with Keep Midland Beautiful for Texas Recycles Day, a campaign aimed towards education and awareness about the benefits of waste reduction and recycling. The event is held each year on the 麻豆原创 main campus.
