One of Hernandez鈥檚 college professors influenced his decision to major in biology. 鈥淗e recognized my potential and offered an undergraduate research position and the rest, as they say, is history.鈥� He enjoys the traditional classroom setting because he believes being in the same room, face-to-face with your students is important in getting to know them better and building a better student-professor relationship. He uses humor in the classroom, so students can see that professors are human and enjoy laughing as much as they do.

He is a homebrewer. He enjoys doing field research in herpetology, especially in remote areas of Mexico where he collects different species of snakes.
